Cockroach Bay Trips

The Cockroach Bay Aquatic Preserve and protect the waterways of the Little Manatee River and its' estuaries. The upriver boundary begins at the Canoe Outpost and extends downstream for about 18 miles to where the Little Manatee River flows into Tampa Bay. Here you will find the largest mangrove estuary in Tampa Bay. Most of this area is preserved as a no motor zone which makes it a perfect place for paddlers to explore its' many miles of mangrove and barrier islands, bird rookeries, mangrove tunnels and beautiful scenery.

For the paddler in a canoe or kayak, there are two marked trails that begin at the boat ramp and wind you through the no-motor zones of the mangrove islands and the bay. To the north, the Snook Trail offers a 1 1/2 hour paddle. To the south, the Horseshoe Crab Trail offers a 1 1/2 hour paddle. Pack a lunch and picnic on a barrier island. Paddle one trail or both or just meander at your own pace. It’s a great way to spend a day on the water in the Florida sun.

For the angler, the area offers some of the finest fishing for Snook, Redfish, and other salt water species. The mangrove estuary along with the extensive grass bed is one of the most productive and important ecosystems in nature. Between casts, enjoy the paddle trails and some great scenery too.
