Cockroach Bay Trips

The Cockroach Bay Aquatic Preserve is an environmental gem in Tampa Bay. It is located at the mouth and south of the Little Manatee River. It is comprised of the largest contiguous mangrove estuary in Tampa Bay along with the Little Manatee River, one of the most natural river systems in Florida. The estuary’s shallow waters, extensive mangrove islands, bird rookeries and barrier islands offer a relaxing glimpse of the bay before development.

For the paddler in a canoe or kayak, there are two marked trails that begin at the boat ramp and wind you through the mangrove islands and the bay. To the north, the Snook Trail offers a 1 - 11/2 hour paddle. To the south, the Horseshoe Crab Trail offers a 2 ½ - 3 hour paddle. Pack a lunch and picnic on a barrier island. Paddle one trail or both or just meander at your own pace. It’s a great way to spend a day on the water in the Florida sun.

For the angler, the area offers some of the finest fishing for snook, redfish, and other salt water species. The mangrove estuary along with the extensive grass bed is one of the most productive and important ecosystems in nature. We provide fully rigged sit on top fishing kayaks which provide a stable platform to help you hook up. Between casts, enjoy the paddle trails and some great scenery too.

Trips to Cockroach Bay may be arranged for any operating day, scheduled trip or by special arrangement. Trips can be customized to any length of time up to 8 hours. Due to the distance from our main facility and the cost of transportation, we may require a minimum number of boats or revenue amount or you may sign up for a scheduled trip on selected days.  Please call us for details or see our Trip Calendar page. Trips leave from the Canoe Outpost or if you prefer, you may provide your own transportation to the dock for increased flexibility with your time.

You may also choose to rent any of our boats at the Outpost and transport it yourself to the bay. We can rent you a trailer or we will furnish you with car pads and tie down straps as well as maps and all paddling equipment. These options give you the most flexibility to plan your own time and does not require a minimum number of boats.

Group and corporate fishing or paddle sightseeing trips can be arranged. It’s a great way to entertain visiting clients, relocation candidates or to build your group’s common experience base. We will work with you to design a memorable trip.
